Morecambe Bay Walk - 23 August 2026
CANW’s 2026 Morecambe Bay Walk, taking place on Sunday 23rd August 2026
To reserve your place, please email Georgia at gmurphy@canw.org.uk or fill out the enquiry form below.
All are welcome to join us on a bay walk; however you must be able to walk at least 8 miles at ease. and be in good health. It isn’t recommended for children under the age of 5 to join a walk unless being carried all the way by their parent / guardian.
Walk Schedule:
The walk will commence at 1:30pm in Arnside. Please be aware that it will begin precisely on time and cannot be delayed, as its schedule is carefully coordinated with the tide.
The walk will finish in Grange-over-Sands. The time will be subject to how long it takes the group to complete the walk.
Distance: The walk can range from 5.5 miles to 9 miles depending on the safest route on the day.
What to wear?
We recommend wearing a pair of comfortable trainers or walking boots. For the first part of the walk the headland terrain is rocky, muddy, sandy, and wet. We strongly advise walkers to be barefoot on the sands.
Are there any breaks on the walk?
When we set off, we must move as one group, as you can imagine walks can spread out quite quickly, although we have our team of Marshalls placed in various locations on the walk it is important, we move as one group.
Once we set off the next stop will be when the guide says so, we then let the back catch up and continue.
Can I take my dog on the bay walk?
Yes, however it is solely your responsibility, if your dog is missing, we cannot stop the walk to look for it so please always keep it under control. Sometimes there are sheep on the marsh at Grange so please dogs are to be on leads well in advance.
Please also note – in 2026, the Guide over Sands Trust have implemented a cost of £5 for up to two dogs per person. This cost will be payable directly to the trust on the day of the walk and the cost will go towards keeping the Tractors running which are used for any emergencies on the walk.
Why are there tractors / Quad bikes on the walk?
Our tractors or Quad bikes are there in the event of an emergency and someone needs to get off the sand or simply needs to take a rest. Please do not let your children play on the tractors or ride on them if there is no need too. Our tractors drivers have a very important role on the walks they are constantly watching walkers to see if anyone needs any help at any time.
Toilets?
Toilets are at the beginning of the walk on Arnside prom please only use café / pub toilets if you are a customer there it is only fair. There are also toilets at the finish of the walk located opposite Grange lido.
What if there is an emergency?
In the event of an emergency, don’t panic. Only Michael or Raymond is to contact the emergency services should they be required. Michael and Raymond are always contactable during the walk
Is there sinking sand on Morecambe Bay?
The answer is yes, this is why it is important you follow exactly what the guide always says. Children must be always supervised.
When crossing the river Kent, it can paddle up at times and have soft areas, if you feel tired, or feel like you’re stuck in the sand don’t panic, simply sit down! Please don’t get your friend to help they can continue across the river, Michael or his partner Joanne are at the rear of the walk to ensure everyone crosses safely, they also have their trained Marshalls who know how to assist and get you across safely. All our team are constantly watching walkers so don’t worry you’re in good hands. If a dog is off the lead, please leave them they will get themselves across the water.
