Youngsters score in major two day charity football fundraiser

Following the roaring success of last year’s pilot Junior Orphanage Cup, Child Action Northwest went BIGGER and BETTER in 2023 by partnering up with Blackburn Rovers Community Trust.

This major two day football tournament had more than 350 players taking part in competitions for four age groups – Under 7s, Under 8s, Under 9s and Under 10s, culminating in trophy presentations from representative from Headline Sponsor, Alex Timpson Trust.

With over 40 youth football teams from across Lancashire and surrounding areas signing up, all matches were then held at Witton Park on the 3G pitches, resulting in a fun and exciting weekend for all involved.

With more than 100 goals scored the winners were elated to be crowned:

U7s winners Wilpshire Wanderers Football Club

STAR Player Blackburn Eagles FC

U8s winners Blackburn Eagles FC Blue

STAR Player Carson U8s from Blackburn Eagles FC

U9s winners Longridge Town

STAR Player Sam U9s from Oswaldtwistle Juniors

U10s winners Huncoat United Junior

STAR Player Dexter U10s from Mill Hill Juniors

Over £4500 has been raised with the total still climbing thanks to the support and fundraising efforts of the individual junior football teams involved. Vital funds that will help support the crucial work both Child Action North West and Blackburn Rovers Community Trust do daily.

Jonathon Cobbold, Director of Development, Innovation & Growth of CANW commented:

“What a fantastic weekend! Firstly a huge thank you to all of the teams that took part, the coaches and families who came to support them, and Blackburn Rovers Community Trust for helping to run such a successful tournament. The Orphanage cup has been running for over 90 years but last year saw us running the first children’s tournament. Seeing over 350 young people taking part, having fun in the sun, and raising vital funds for the two charities was really special. Special mention to the Alex Timpson Trust for sponsoring the tournament and roll on 2024 as we go even bigger and even better.”

Chris McGrail, Football Development Manager of BRCT commented:

“It was an absolute pleasure to be invited to be a part of the Junior Orphanage Cup. To have the chance to work with the team at Child Action North West so closely was amazing. I want to say thank you to every club, parent/guardian, coach, referee, venue host and players who supported the tournament. All the funds raised will help support vital community-focused work in Blackburn with Darwen. Overall, it was a successful weekend of football for a fantastic cause.”

The 2023 Adult Orphanage Cup final between finalists Openreach and 2022 Orphanage Cup Winners Accrington Stanley Community Trust will take place on the AFC Darwen pitch on Saturday 17th June 2023, 3pm Kickoff.

If their previous matches are anything to go off then the final is set to be a fantastic one!

Admission on the gate will be £5 per adult, £2.50 per children. With all money raised going directly to help: children, young people and families in their local communities.

We’d love to see as many supporters attend, so get the date in your diaries, not one to be missed.
