Coping with Medical Diagnosis
Reason for Referral:
Young person (YP) was struggling with sleep due to anxiety about a newly diagnosed medical condition, fearing death. Mum’s sleep was also affected.
Intervention:
- 6 × 1-hour sessions using play therapy and solution-focused techniques.
- Explored feelings of uncertainty, reinforced positive self-belief, and introduced coping strategies.
Measurable Outcomes:
- Emotional Regulation: YP reported feeling more in control of negative thoughts by session 6.
- Acceptance: YP acknowledged she cannot control the condition but can accept it.
- Engagement: 100% session attendance; YP actively chose topics to explore.
Feedback:
YP gave positive feedback and expressed enjoyment of sessions. Practitioner noted strong engagement and suggested future counselling during transition to high school.
