CANW Fostering Service Committed to Continuous Improvement Following Ofsted Inspection.
Following our latest Ofsted inspection, Child Action Northwest’s Fostering Service has received an overall grading of “Requires Improvement”
While we recognise there areas where we need to improve, we are encouraged by the many strengths highlighted throughout the report and remain fully committed to delivering the highest quality support for our children, young people, foster carers and staff.
Ofsted noted that: "The agency promotes a strong fostering community."
The inspection identified several examples of positive practice that reflect the dedication, commitment and care demonstrated across our fostering community.
Inspectors found that foster carers, children and staff are encouraged to communicate and work together closely, with children and carers reporting that they feel involved, valued and well-known by the service.
The report also recognised the meaningful opportunities available for children and young people to have their voices heard. Ofsted praised our well-established Youth Council, highlighting how children are actively consulted on matters that affect them.
A particularly positive aspect of the inspection was the recognition of the role that foster carers and children play in shaping the service. Ofsted noted that carers and young people have been actively involved in key agency decisions, including participation in the recruitment process for the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer.
The report also highlighted the strong relationships that exist between staff, foster carers and children, stating that supervising social workers are viewed as part of the fostering family. Inspectors acknowledged the commitment shown by staff, who often attend important milestones in children’s lives, such as school awards ceremonies and other significant events.
In addition, Ofsted recognised CANW’s commitment to professional development, noting that managers and leaders provide a range of learning, development and progression opportunities for staff, helping to create a skilled and supportive workforce.
Looking Ahead
While we are pleased that many aspects of our work have been recognised positively, we fully accept the findings of the inspection and acknowledge the areas where improvements are required.
We have already begun work to address the recommendations identified by Ofsted and are committed to ensuring that these improvements strengthen our fostering service.
