Olly of the Ages, by Scott Threlfall:

Inspiring Little Historians and Supporting CANW

We’re delighted to support the launch of Olly of the Ages, a children’s book series created by local author Scott Threlfall.

What started as a father helping his son discover the excitement of history has grown into a children’s book series with a purpose. Through Olly of the Ages, local author Scott Threlfall hopes to inspire a new generation of young readers while raising vital funds for Child Action Northwest through the donation of all book profits.

Encouraged by his parents to read from a young age, Scott developed a fascination with history through the works of authors such as Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. Their stories inspired him to learn more about the people, events and challenges that shaped the world we live in today.

That passion only grew stronger over the years. With the inspiration for Olly of the Ages coming much closer to home. When Scott’s son, Oliver, began learning about history at school, Scott looked for creative ways to bring the subject to life. Together, they built projects, created artwork and even designed their own version of the Bayeux Tapestry. Through these activities, Scott realised that while some children found history fascinating, many saw it as boring or difficult to engage with. Keen to make history more fun, Scott created a series of presentations featuring historical characters brought to life through his own voice acting. From fearsome Vikings and Anglo-Saxon kings to Norman knights, the characters helped bring the stories of the past to life. Many of the children loved it, and what began as merely a fun activity soon encouraged more of them to take an interest in history.

That’s when the idea for Olly of the Ages was born!

The series follows a young time-travelling character, Olly, who experiences historical events and civilisations first-hand through exciting adventures. By blending real historical people, places and events with imaginative storytelling, the books aim to spark children’s curiosity and encourage them to learn more about the past.

As Scott puts it, “If this book can inspire even just one child to develop a love of history while helping other children to access the support they deserve and find their way in the world, then they have achieved exactly what they were created to do!”.

Designed for younger readers, Olly of the Ages makes history accessible, engaging and fun, helping children discover that the past is filled with adventure, heroes, villains, discoveries and lessons that still matter today.

Scott’s commitment to supporting children extends beyond the pages of his books. Having seen the importance of a positive and nurturing start in life, he has chosen to donate all profits from book sales to Child Action Northwest.

With every purchase, readers are helping CANW support children, young people and families – providing vital services, opportunities and support to those who need it most.
