Some of the world’s most well-known people started life in foster care
It’s Foster Care Fortnight. When we think about famous actors, athletes or innovators, it’s easy to assume they all had straightforward and privileged childhoods. The reality is often very different.
BAFTA award-winning actor Barry Keoghan, Oscar-nominated actor Samantha Morton, and former 007 actor Pierce Brosnan all spent time in foster care. World‑class gymnast Simone Biles, DJ and producer Goldie, actor Neil Morrissey, and Apple founder Steve Jobs were also supported by care systems when they were children. Nelson Mandela, Coco Chanel, Cher and John Lennon also all experienced foster care as children.
The stories of these high profile people are powerful reminders that circumstances at the start of life do not have to define what a child can become.
Foster care supports children when they need it most
Children come into foster care for many reasons. What they need more than anything is safety, stability and someone who believes in them.
Fostering provides a child with:
- A secure home during a time of uncertainty
- Emotional support and encouragement
- Consistency, care and understanding
- Opportunities to build confidence and resilience
Not every child in foster care will grow up to be world‑famous, but every child deserves the chance to fulfil their own potential.
The difference one foster carer can make
Behind every fostering success story you will ever hear, there is always at least one adult who offered stability to a child when it mattered most. In other words, a foster carer who listened, encouraged, believed and didn’t give up.
Foster carers need compassion, patience, and the ability to offer a safe and supportive home where a child can have the space and support to thrive. With the right support, training and guidance, foster carers can help children:
- Believe in themselves
- Build healthy relationships
- Dream about their future
- Recover from trauma
Could you be that person for a child?
During Foster Care Fortnight, we’re shining a light on the life‑changing impact fostering can have – on the lives of children and of foster carers too.
If you’ve ever wondered whether fostering could be right for you, now is the perfect time to find out more. You could help shape a child’s future in positive ways that will last a lifetime.
