The CANW Supported Lodgings Service offers an excellent opportunity for young people to have the chance to work towards living independently.
Supported Lodgings placements are available in the homes of adults who have a genuine desire to support older young people. This means that they take a real interest in the lives of young people and help them to learn the skills that they need to live independently. This is not an easy transition for a young person and the support offered by the supported lodgings ‘host’ makes a huge difference!
CANW also offer additional support from the dedicated Young People’s Support team, so if a young person needs specific support in a particular area, this can be made available.
Supported lodgings offers a ‘stepping stone’ for young people. All of them have faced challenges in their lives and need guidance and support to get their lives ‘on track’. We have seen many examples of young people making significant strides forward – and achieving success where this did not look likely.
Our supported lodgings hosts talk passionately about the support they provide for young people – and we in turn are proud of the work that they do and proud of the young people that arrive in support lodgings in need of help and leave as a young adult.
Unfortunately, research show that many young people do not get ‘offered the chance to be supported in a home or family environment – so live in bed and breakfast accommodation, for instance, or in accommodation that they are not ready to move into. How many of us could have coped with living alone at the age of 18 years?
Supported lodgings offers these young people the chance to turn their lives around and to have a brighter future, living independently.
